continental drift (we'll all be gone in 100 years)

gondwanaland is named after the upper paleozoic and mesozoic formations of the gondwana district of central India, which display a number of shared geologic features. in the late nineteenth century, on the basis of comparative geological evidence, the austrian geologist, edward suess, suggested that the continents of africa, south america, australia and india were once part of a single supercontinent, which he called "gondwanaland". as these continents only began to break up some 130 million years ago, this great supercontinent had a life of around 520 million years; making it perhaps the most important geological structure of the last billion years.
and then time passed and SMASHED BLOCKED found a new brand new evening timeslot, thursdays 10pm-12am starting thursday, february 11. this will be our last morning transmission, as we reassemble the continents for the weirdest, wooliest & booliest wad of psyche, punk, jazz, & rock & roll this side of prehistory...

Tuesday, Dec 22, 2009beyond the pale: rat patrol from fort bragg pt. 2
Download this episode (60 min)
part 2 of ol' sir lord bobby's suggested sequencing of the clash's unfinished 'rat patrol from fort bragg' record finds the group entering their strangest musical territory yet, showing the full strengths of their synthesis both musically and chemically as a group. it is ironic that the music created during this time comes from such great unrest as the clash find themselves so overworked, emotionally and creatively manipulated by manager bernie rhodes, and generally in need of a vacation. nonetheless, with tracks compiled from various remote recording locations in the far east, as well as studio dates in new york and london, the group cobbled together its boldest statement yet. consider both the plotting of the beatles' 'white album; as well as the clash's own multi-disc records 'london calling' and 'sandinista!' in how this record may have played out. as such, the second disc tends to be for the more dutiful listener. with singles and more beat oriented material making up disc 1, the albums latter portion explores the groups interests in jazz and genre-bending, anchored still by corkers such as 'overpowered by funk,' 'inoculated city' (with its litany of samples originally responsible for the record being pulled from store shelves when 'combat rock' did finally see light of day) and the unreleased calypso carnival of 'kill time'.
otherwise, the cuts included for context in both episodes feature post-'combat rock' singles from the clash (their final, great single 'this is england') and big audio dynamite ('the bottom line,' originally queued up as the next clash single before mick was sacked and formed B.A.D.). included in today's podcast we find 'mustapha dance,' mick's instrumental remix of 'rock the casbah,' as well as mick and joe strummer's collaboration on B.A.D.'s sophomore record 'no.10 upping st.' the cut featured here, 'beyond the pale,' is note-perfect clash material, from its mid-tempo rock a la 'somebody got murdered' or 'spanish bombs,' to its multicultural musings on the foundations of modern england and 'the dark side of london that's way beyond the pale.'
mustapha dance - the clash
overpowered by funk - the clash
sean flynn - the clash
inoculated city - the clash
long time jerk - the clash

Tuesday, Dec 22, 2009the future is unwritten: rat patrol from fort bragg pt. 1
Download this episode (60 min)
we'll let the platter handle the chatter today kids, but i will fill you in on what you're sampling with this week's special. the album we know as 'combat rock' was once a very different record, entitled 'rat patrol from fort bragg'. originally mixed by clash guitarist and chief tunesmith mick jones, 'rat patrol's original aesthetic was one of swampy, sweaty jazz, big beat rockabilly, disorderly dub poetry and post-punk calypsos. running at 2 full LPs, 'rat patrol' was a more seamless progression from the roots rock explorations of 'london calling' and the global musical lexicography of 'sandinista!'. this week's special presents my own sequencing of the record as it could have been, culled from numerous bootlegs, b-sides and more, suggesting the potential musical landscape the clash were setting out to explore were it not for meddlesome manager bernie rhodes' reductionist tendencies.
find sides 1 and 2 featured here today, with 3 and 4 coming next episode. suffice to say, each track here is either largely transformed or altogether unreleased, making for a dramatically different listening experience - horns and hollering adorn 'should i stay or should i go', 'know your rights' is a cold public address, and 'the beautiful people are ugly' is wiry afro-carib psychedelia. included for context are post-'combat rock' singles from both the clash and mick jones' big audio dynamite, as an indication of where the group members did go. we also observe today the passing of joe strummer in his home at age 50, victim of a congenital heart defect seven years ago on dec. 22, 2007.
the bottom line - big audio dynamite
know your rights - the clash
car jamming - the clash
the beautiful people are ugly - the clash
red angel dragnet - the clash
atom tan - the clash
should i stay or should i go? - the clash
rock the casbah - the clash
